Our client recently purchased a newer home that was large and well-built but not in keeping with their open-concept, modern, style. We used a relatively small but striking palette of materials throughout the ground floor of the home to demarcate the function of each space. Large, formal gestures such as lighted alcoves and lowered ceiling planes provide the visual cues that connect the different spaces.
