Up to quite recently our studio has been more focused on downtown urban infill projects, so we were keenly interested when this opportunity arose to work in a more rural setting. Our client lives downtown, but has a weekend and summer retreat in Mulmur, a small rural community 90 minutes northwest of Toronto. It’s a lovely property situated on a large, rolling hill, but the existing house seems oddly out of context with its site. Our plan is to address this issue. We will be adding an artist’s studio with near floor-to-ceiling windows that wrap around the corner, and re-cladding the house in softer, warmer materials. There will be a series of outdoor decks, a pool area, and soft landscaping which will be appropriately integrated into the grading of the land, and offer panoramic views from different vantage points. We’re in the process of developing the drawings further, and the implementation of the project will likely be phased in over two or three years. Since beginning this project, we have begun work on another rural house project, this one on a heavily wooded lot in Manitoba.
